Overview
The Data Resources Hub (DRH) maintains CUBSS (Computational Unit for Behavioral and Social Sciences) as a computing and data storage solution for Penn State Social Science research projects. CUBSS is a state-of-the-art Windows-based high-performance server provided by Penn State's Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), specifically developed to support the demanding computational needs of social scientists.
This robust server is adept at handling intensive tasks with substantial storage capacity, advanced GPUs, and a variety of specialized software. Additionally, CUBSS facilitates data transfer through methods like OneDrive synchronization, mapped network drives, and SFTP. Its versatility and power make CUBSS an invaluable asset for researchers looking to push the boundaries in behavioral and social sciences, encapsulating SSRI’s commitment to supporting high-caliber scientific research.
For more information and to apply for an account, see https://ithelp.ssri.psu.edu/guides/cubss.
High Storage Capacity
CUBSS offers over 1 petabyte of available direct-attach storage for active research projects. At no cost to PSU social science faculty, researchers are given their own private folders, or, for extremely large datasets, their own disk volume.
Data can be downloaded directly to CUBSS from your provider via their secure website, SFTP, or SharePoint site. If you already have your data in OneDrive or other cloud service, you can easily copy them to your private CUBSS folder.
Ideal for Restricted-use Social Science Data
CUBSS is ideal for research projects that use Level 1 and Level 2 data. DRH staff work closely together to help researchers who work with restricted data to both access and store their data in compliance with data use agreements.
DRH also has capacity to assist researchers working with some types of Level 3 data. Please schedule a consultation with us if you have questions about how we can help.
CUBSS Makes Collaboration Easier
Because CUBSS storage space is organized by project rather than by user, CUBSS can accommodate collaborative teams of all types. The principal investigator, students, collaborators at Penn State, and non-PSU team members who have sponsored PSU computer accounts, can log into CUBSS via a remote desktop and analyze the same data together in a shared folder.
